Planet X is selling its Spitfire titanium road bike frameset for just £599.99, the lowest price tag I have ever seen for a Ti bike. Billed as ‘a competitive road machine’, the Spitfire is a simple, appealing design with rim brakes, external cable routing and a threaded bottom bracket. Did I mention it’s six hundred pounds?
That remarkable price tag – a discount of £500 from the notional RRP – includes a Selcof-branded carbon fork and frame hardware. You’ll need to supply the rest of the components to turn it into a bike yourself.
The frame is made from 3Al/2.5V titanium, the same grade used for the vast majority of Ti bikes including the likes of Reilly's new flagship Fusion aero bike (although I should note there's a lot more to making a good Ti frame than simply the grade of material used).
Planet X lists two different weights for a medium frame, 1,510g and 1,490g, while the fork is claimed to weigh both 320g and 375g.
Either way, those are pretty typical numbers for a standard Ti frameset and a full-carbon fork, so I wouldn’t fret about it.
The Spitfire’s geometry is pure road with 382mm of reach and 547mm of stack for a medium, and the frameset is available in four sizes from small to XL.
Don't go thinking you’ll build an all-road bike by the way – tyre clearances are officially limited to just 25mm.
A caveat: we’ve never tested the Spitfire so we can’t tell you how it rides. Planet X bikes are usually pretty sorted though and I have fond memories of the titanium Pickenflick gravel bike from sister brand On One I reviewed some years ago at that other website.
Oh, and this is not an ad and Cyclist doesn’t even earn any affiliate revenue from Planet X. I just needed to draw your attention to this bargain as an outlet to stop me buying one myself, because I have absolute zero need for a Spitfire even if, I cannot overstate this, it’s six hundred pounds.
